My theme for 2021 was SURRENDER. My theme for 2022 – harkening back to my Camino trek across Spain in 2019 – is SIMPLICITY. So my year is starting off with an acknowledgement of simple pleasures – outdoors (going for long walks with my beloved Kim, resuming my daily running practice at a local track with a rubberized surface) and indoors (enjoying our favourite t.v. shows [including “Downton Abbey”!] and movies on a brand new t.v. and soundbar!).

I have a few simple goals this year: (1) to continue to offer my weekly “Morning Musings” broadcast on Wednesday mornings, and to serve numerous churches/centres on Sundays (performing online allows me to “be” in several places on the same day); (2) to reclaim a life-long dream and begin working as a voice over artist (on commercials and in animation); (3) to complete my book about my Camino experience. (If you could help hold that intention in your mind and heart for me, I’d really appreciate it!)

This month, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we all continue to be greatly affected by COVID, and how we’re all burnt out about it – tired, frustrated, and wanting to get back to life as it was 2 years ago… And, I’ve been finding some wonderful quotes that are inspiring me and helping me to deal with my feelings. The one that I want to share with you this month is by Pema Chödrön, a female buddhist monk: “ ‘You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather.’ Emotions, catastrophes, fights, tragedy and all the daily fluctuations of life are only temporary. What makes us an individual is separate from these things that seem to make up the consistency of life.”

Pema’s words inspired me to write a simple 4-part chant called “I Am The Sky”.  (I changed the quote to first person singular, so that each and every one of us can affirm it.) The words are:

I am the sky

And everything else is just the weather
The weather
